In conjunction with the Spruce Root, Inc. team, the Programs Manager is responsible for identification, development and management of projects and initiatives that improve the economic condition of southeast Alaska and its rural communities. The position is also responsible for monitoring, analyzing and positioning Spruce Root, Inc. within southeast Alaska communities to achieve the objectives of the company. The Programs Manager will directly manage projects, clients, partnerships and programs within the CDFI.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Proactively communicate with stakeholders and partners in the communities on a regular basis so that Spruce Root has open channels and rapport within the communities.
  • Work with Spruce Root leadership to develop and implement the Spruce Root strategic plan.
  • Represent Spruce Root’s interests serving as the regional Economic Development Catalyst for the Sustainable Southeast Partnership, working with community catalysts to advance and support projects within each community while meeting our mission.
  • Oversee and administer projects including the Path to Prosperity Business Development Competition. This will require developing and implementing growth and funding strategies to sustainably continue program and result in loan pipeline opportunities, where possible.
  • Generate new loan opportunities for the loan program through client support services including one-on-one business mentorship/coaching, and traveling entrepreneurial workshops
  • Engage in business development initiatives at community levels to understand where Spruce Root can leverage resources to maintain and develop infrastructure required to support economic growth.
  • Responsible for ensuring company visibility in all aspects of the community, establishing and maintaining relationships with other organizations in the community to maximize economic development services.
  • Work will require frequent travel throughout the region
  • Perform related duties, loan program support and complete special or directed projects as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Consistently report to Executive Director financial and performance of programs against program goals.


General Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelors or higher degree in business, finance, public administration, economic development, or a related field with private sector experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in an economic development capacity.
  • Ability to initiate and develop business plans, and act and operate independently with minimal daily direction, particularly in ambiguous settings.
  • Managerial skills – leading, planning, organizing, controlling and administering.
  • Knowledgeable of state and federal government, with an ability to read, interpret, and understand policies and legislation.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, external agencies and philanthropic/impact investment partners to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results.
  • Strong personal passion for Spruce Root’s mission Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong acumen with budgeting and planning process
  • Working knowledge of financial statements and GAAP standards.
  • Working knowledge of mission driven, non-profit entities.
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral) and ability to speak in public setting
  • Strong ability to work as a productive team member
  • Experience working in community development
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
