  • Overview

    Sealaska is seeking an experienced Environmental Health and Safety manager to oversee the development and implementation of all the health and safety programs across all divisions. You will be responsible for maximizing all employees’ safety at work and the use of proper safeguards. This role will conduct on-going training regarding safety for all employees.

     

    Sealaska currently has businesses in land management, professional services with a groundwater emphasis, and natural foods, specializing in seafood. Sealaska is an Alaska Native Corporation, formed under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971.  Sealaska has approximately 22,000 shareholders, primarily of Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian descent.

    Responsibilities

     

    • Develop and implement the corporation-wide safety program, including employee training
    • Review operations and safety plans to identify and mitigate risks
    • Perform safety orientations and site inspections to confirm compliance with the safety program 
    • Assist operational staff with the creation of activity hazard analyses
    • Research and explain safety requirements
    • Report safety incidents to management
    • Investigate safety incidents and write reports to identify root causes and incorporate them into the safety program to avoid reoccurrence
    • Provide corrective action recommendations to address risk, changing conditions and promote continuous improvement
    • Develop and maintain a company crisis management plan 
    • Oversee and maintain OSHA and other mandatory safety/injury reports
    • Draft and review site-specific safety plans
    • Oversee employee safety certifications

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or safety-related field preferred
    • 10+ years of experience in an ESH role
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification preferred. A master’s degree in related field with an ASP will be considered in lieu of CSP certification.
    • Strong knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, EPA and other related Federal, state and local regulations, auditing procedures, environmental compliance, and environmental safety & health programs
    • Broad applied knowledge of principles, concepts and techniques in the field of health & safety
    • Experience developing, evaluating, and implementing site specific EHS programs, training, policy and practices
    • Ability to work within established policies and procedures, using independent judgment and ingenuity
    • Experienced and skill to conduct research, investigate alternative solutions and recommend needed change
    • Experience with Department of Labor multi-state requirements and safety inspection schedules.
    • Ability to travel on short notice, as needed.

     

    Environment (Working conditions, physical requirements):

    • This position will require moving of up to 10 lbs. This position will be mostly stationary requiring some movement around the office and frequent communication with others. The average working hours will be 8 hours per day for this position with occasional need to exceed.
