Overview

Apply your legal education and interest in policy at your Alaska Native Corporation this summer. As the Legal & Policy Intern, you will support Sealaska’s legal department and policy efforts. For part of your internship, you will work alongside Vice President of Policy & Legal Affairs Jaeleen Kookesh on projects related to public policy and advocacy, including legislation, statutes, legislative history, and differing legal and public opinions. You will also assist in preparing materials for Sealaska board meetings and election. For another part of your internship, you will work with General Counsel Kent Rasmussen and assist with Sealaska’s risk management program, possible litigation including discovery, and other matters related to business law.

While applying your legal education, you will learn the breadth of legal careers and hone your research skills. You will also gain understanding of day-to-day legal work and how policies can be tailored to help people and solve issues.

This internship can take place remotely or via telecommute while supporting Sealaska legal staff in Seattle, WA, and Juneau, AK.

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze public policy and other discrete legal issues
  • Review basic contract documents for specific purposes
  • Revise and edit various legal-related documents
  • File various administrative forms and documents
  • Perform due diligence reviews

Qualifications

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Strong interest in law school or currently attending law school
  • Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder
  • At least 18 years of age by start date
  • Must be currently enrolled in college or a vocational-technical school or a recent graduate (1-2 years) and have completed one year of school by the start date
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • First year law student, or an undergraduate student who has completed policy or legal classes
  • At least a 2.5 GPA
  • Strong critical thinking and research skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently
  • Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to travel, as needed
