Overview

Apply your interest in geographical information systems (GIS) and computer programming to projects on tribal lands this summer. The GIS Technician Intern is part of Sealaska’s Managed Business Solutions (MBS) team working on the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Division of Water and Power. As you work alongside GIS and computer programming professionals, you will be introduced to a career in GIS analysis and learn key components of a GIS program. Depending on your interests and skills, the team can tailor projects to what you are hoping to learn and experience.

This internship can be accomplished remotely or at the BIA Office of Trust Services in Lakewood, CO. Throughout the summer, you may have the option to visit Native American reservations supported by the team’s efforts. During these site visits, you can meet with local staff to better understand the impact of your work. You may also have the opportunity to visit the MBS team in Lakewood, CO.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to navigate and pull queried datasets from national REST services (NRCS and USGS in particular)
  • Update parcels for one of the BIA Irrigation Projects in Northwest Region
  • Digitize new GIS features and update attributes within existing GIS databases
  • Receive technical training regarding accessing government data
  • Optional: visit and collaborate with local staff at BIA project and office sites

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity and experience with computer programming (scripting)
  • Familiarity and experience with GIS
  • Prefer GPA over 2.5
  • Strong critical thinking and research skills
  • Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently
  • Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to travel, as needed

The employee must be able to lift/carry and/or move up to 20-50 pounds safely. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal. Frequent and extended periods in outdoor settings sometimes with uneven terrain. Daily hiking distances may sometimes be in excess of three miles total.
